Words and phrasos from Han time onwards are generally not very difficult to trans. late correctly. In proe-ling texts, on the contrary, thers are tiousands and thousands of words and phrasos, the true sense of which is very obscure and whieh have boen & aubjoct for speculation of scores of commentators, early and late, In my Gramata Serica I could only give brief definitions of words, simply roproducing tho meanings accorålng to the earliest commentators, and no pirases at all. but that doos not mean that I am finished with all ”Shese interpretation questions, on the contrary, I mm interested in pushing the matter further - I believe that the method followed by Legge end even by Waley: to read up some 20 or 30 commentaries and ohoose the meaning that seems most "likely" must be a passed stage. It 18 necessary to subject these problems to a much more systematic 1i1cuistie treatment and to weigh tne evidence according to other, more atrictly scientific standards. This is why I am very interested to learn how far ycu have advanced with your new diectio- nary, whieh, I take it, is to have a more scientific standard than aarlier worke in the field.
