[LA THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART 'CLEVELAND, OHIO, U.S.A. UNIVERSITY CENTER, STATION WILLIAM MATHEWSON MILLIKEN, DIRECTOR CABLE ADDRES January 24, 1938 IUSART CLEVELAND Professor J. G. Andersson Ostasiatiska Samlingarna Sveavägen, 65 r Stockholm VI, Sweden Dear Professor Andersson: This Museum has just purchased from Yamanaka and Company the laequer storks and snakes that were excavated at Changsha in 1934. As I am told that you have seen this object, I am writing to ask if you would care to give me any pertinent information that I might quote in a future article. Moreover, there is one problem on which I should like to ask your opinion. Heretofore, the birds have always been set up facing each other but Mr. K. Tanaka of Yamanaka and Company suggested to me that perhaps they should go back to back and I most say that I agree with his opinion. In the first place, the legs of the birds seem to fit the holes better and, secondly, a drum or some other object could have been supported from the holes through the birds! necks and supported by struts on their backs. You will recall that the backs are the only undecorated parts except for the lower legs. I am having photographs taken, some of which I shall send you within a few days. Needless to say, I shall be tremendously indebted to you for any suggestions or information that you feel free to give me. Yours very sincerely, Li Howard CoonleX Hollis Curator of Oriddtal Art HOH:LH
