For the Egyptians, death was a passage from life on earth to a new and better existence among the sacred Field of Reeds in the Realm of the Dead. However, the road there was not an easy one. In order to get past all the guards and through all the gates, one had to be well prepared.
Texts were inscribed on tomb walls, coffins and papyri in order to lead the deceased right. So as not to be forgotten, the name of the deceased was written everywhere, both inside and outside of the tomb. The body was deemed the abode of the soul also after death and thus, mummified to prevent it from decomposing.
However, the most important preparation was to live a righteous life before death. The life, all the thoughts and actions of every man and woman were assessed after death when their hearts were weighed before the Court of Osiris. There it was determined whether or not the owner of the heart was allowed to continue into eternal afterlife.

För egyptierna var döden en passage från livet på jorden till en ny och bättre tillvaro på dödsrikets välsignade vassfält. Men vägen dit var inte lätt. För att ta sig förbi alla väktare och genom alla portar gällde det att vara väl förberedd.
Texter skrevs in på gravväggar, kistor och papyrus för att leda den döde rätt. Hans namn skrevs överallt i och utanpå graven, så att han inte skulle glömmas bort. Och hans kropp mumifierades för att inte förmultna. Den behövdes som själens boning även efter döden.
Den viktigaste förberedelsen var ändå att leva ett rättfärdigt liv. Varje människas liv, alla hennes tankar och handlingar, kontrollerades efter döden, då hennes hjärta vägdes inför Osiris domstol. Där avgjordes vem som fick fortsätta in i det eviga livet på andra sidan
