Object is carved wooden shield with mineral pigment geometric design in red, yellow, black and white. Blue/purple pigment visible in some areas. Pigments appear intact and well attached to wooden surface. Carved wooden handle on reverse of shield, carved ovoid prominence at centre of shield front. Shield is in good condition overall with historical losses and surface scratches and indentation in the wood front and back, consistent with use. The object is numberd in three locations- 1969.31,485 in black ink on a resinous barrier layer on one side of the shield rear; 1969.31.485 in white ink on a resinous barrier layer, below which S.J.487 in black ink, on the opposite side of the shield rear; a small, adhered paper label printed with ‘487’ on the top edge of the shield rear. The rear of the shield is spotted with an off-white material, possibly as a result of prior use. Dark brown/blue stain on lower edge of shield rear. Shield was mounted with fishing wire tied around handle, and object has surface dust overall. Mounting wire removed, and object surface cleaned with soft brush and light vacuum.
