The word fetish is said to originate from contacts between Portuguese Catholics and magic objects in the kingdom of the Congo in the late 1400’s. In the course of the colonization, the production of these carefully composed minkisi increased, and so did the European interest in those objects.
The Protestant mission movement demanded that people, in order to be regarded as good Christians, handed over their magic objects or destroyed them. Sometimes the objects were burned and sometimes they were submerged in the river. The collecting activity too was a way to take care of and disarm these “dangerous and pagan things”.
