OPP, fr 2 et HA fn fd fe The Geological Survey, & 3, Feng - Sheng Hutung, W. Peking, China. oo July 5, 1987. The original agreement was that the entire Swedish fund donated by Mr. Kreuger of 50,000 crowns approximately equivalent to 25,000 Chinese dollars is entirely to be used for the printing of Palaeontologia Sinica with the only condition that the printing should be done in Sweden. The administration of the fund was put into the hands of the Swedish Committee who has been asked to for- ward every year to the Geological Survey of China an account of re- ceipt and expenditure. The Peking fund which you have so friendly called "V. K. Ting Publication Fund" is for the Palaeontologia Sinica printed in China or elsewhere than Sweden or for any other publica- tions purposes for which Pr. V. K. Ting is free to use it. 4 somewhat important modification was brought up when you suggested last year that fascicles of the Ser. C. printed in Sweden should be now also paid from Peking. The reason was apparently that as you have suggested in April 1925 the then remaining Swedish fund 36 ,000 crowns was divided into three equal parts for Archaeology, vertebrate paleontology and paleobotany, and at present, the part reserved for vertebrate is presumably already exhausted. Our ideas about the using of the funds have been clearly stated by Dr. Ting in his letter dated Feb. 9th 1925. We are however ready to agree to any new mode of payment so far as it is compatible with the interest of the Palaeontologia Sinica as a whole and as the Chinese Survey's publication. In order to have a elear idea of the whole situation I have made three tables appended to this letter. -”

Lagrelius to print Mr. Young's paper at this moment when lir. Young is in Sweden purposely for this printing upon Dr. Wiman's and our advice but largely at his own expenses may easily produce the impression among young Chinese students that the Palaeol. Sinica fund is solely for Swedish workers and the donation to the Survey was but a name. I hope however that by carrying out the scheme I sug- gested, the Pal. S5inica fund which is ER PRE fund will be remembered for ever with gratitude by all paleonto- logists in China. Yours very sincerely, . a / dö frari bl) J Sf = r LS ) CS $! 0794 PR 2 AM MA om me Mi Ke | The Geological Survey, 3 3, Feng -Sheng Hutung, W. Peking, China. oo July 5, 1987. Table I gives the exact account of the Peking fund. Table two is based on the average cost of printing in Sweden you gave me. Committee. Table III is interesting as it show how much is still needed. ”Yhe present situation is asxs follows: Fund still needed beside fund remaining in about $ 70,000 Sweden. Fund remaining in Peking. Få er. From Å's 320 months salary. $ 28,120 48,120 There remains still a difference or deficit of about $22,000. The Peking fund is therefore not so ample as it may seem and of this we can not rely too much upon the uncertain factor of your salary which will come very slowly. Assuming that you will be paid up in the following six years, I try to make a yearly budget of 9 years of publication as follows: lst-3rd years from A's salary $ 3,670 Bank interest of 1,800 TIL. döp. 5.470 Total in three years 16 ,410 4th-6th years fron A's salary 5,700 Bank interest of 1,800 f£1z. dop. 7,500 Total in three years 2 22 ,500

O7I6, JR 2 a Co Hm TN fd 1: The Geological Survey, 5 3, Feng - Sheng Hutung, W. Peking, China. July 5, 1987. reserved for your Aårchaeological publications. Anyhow the part thus reserved is in total quite sufficient to meet the "futher neeä" (I) Table III. Thus with the Swedish fund still left and the Peking fund to be spent in the way as above outlined, we shall be able to carry on at a& reasonable speed the publications of all the series and to have all the projected publications issued in a re- latively short period, unless the Tsai Ching Pu fails to pay you what we expect. In such case we have probably to reduce the print- ing accordingly and proportionately unless there may be some other resources. But there is equal chance that the Tsai-Ching Pu may pay more, then we shall have a larger fixed deposit then $ 18,000 so as to have more interest therefdrn. To carry out the above outlined scheme, there is some difficulty this year to pay from Peking as much as $3,000 to Stockholm, for this proposal though reasonable as it may be, is quite unexpected to me. I shall however try my best to meet the new situation. We have now already in press in Peking three memoirs viz. J. S. Lee's fusulina, Y. T. Chao's Hröäustär. and H. TT. Halle's Yunnan plants. (text only). It means a total cost of about $ 3,600. The céöorperation between the Chinese Survey and the Swedish scientists for the Palaeontologia jinica as you and Dr. Ting have so ably arranged is really a splendid one and has

In other words by keeping a capital fund in fixed deposits as Dr. Ting has so wisely suggested it ig possible to spend an annual sum of about $ 6,000 during 9 years and to meet the expenses of all the planned publications. Of the annual sum of $ 6,000-7,500, we must reserve at least one half for the paleontological works of Ser. B. or other works done in China or by Chinese palaeontologists, the other half Or sö will be available for your archeological publications or to print the few monographs on vertebrates and fossil plants which the Stockholm fund may not be sufficient to pay (as shown in Table III). During the first two or three years, the income is less than $ 6,000, but the deficiency can be largely met with by the re- maining Swedish fund of which an important portion was already

RR OPIZ, I ÄR 25 AM ML 0 eb fä Je The Geological Survey, 3, Feng - Sheng Hutung, W. Peking, China. July 5, 1987. Dear Dr. Andersson:- You gave me last year a bill of Palaeontologia Sinica Ser. C printed in 3weden to be paid from Peking. I anm sorry that the matter was not taken up since then as I shortly went to Japan and after-warås have been busy with other things. Ir am glad that ir. Lagrelius remembered me with a letter which runs as follows: "By this we beg to send you copies of our accounts of Oct. 2lst 1926, of Doll. 3.020:- for Palaeontologia Sinica, which were handed over to you by lir. Lagrelius. We should be very much obliged to you if you would kind- ly remit to us for this amount as early as it would be convenient for you. We have received for printing the manuscript of Lr. I i Chung-Chien Young, but we should prefer not to begin this work until we have received your remittance." Now the printing of lir. Young's memoir is a (small matter, I am quite willing to have it printed in Peking If Mr. Lagrelius prefers not to print it in 3weden. It is desir- able however to reach some clear understanding about the payment of the Publication Fund. I shall try to make here a summary of the matter as I Glkere Stat it from Dr. Ting and many correspond- ances from you and then outline a practical scheme for the fut- ure.
