Friidrotts-VM 1995
Sommaren 1995 var Göteborg värdstad för ett av världens största idrottsevenemang: friidrotts-VM. Johan Wettergren var själv löpare, men under VM hade han ett helt annat uppdrag: att vara maskoten KaLo.
“KaLo gjorde volter, hoppade över hindren inne på arenorna och så. Det var så varmt i Göteborg den veckan, galet varmt, 60-65 grader inne i dräkten. Alla skulle kramas, ha autografer och ta bilder…”
VM var en folkfest, men det fanns också ett annat syfte: att locka turister och näringsliv till stan. Det nya kommunala bolaget Göteborg & co hade ett tydligt mål som kommunen och näringslivet samarbetade kring: Göteborg skulle hitta en ny identitet som evenemangsstad.
Turismen till Göteborg ökade kraftigt under 1990-talet, precis som antalet kontor för utländska företag. Efter 1995 har Göteborg varit värd för internationella mästerskap i handboll, ishockey och fotboll. Varför, egentligen? Kanske ligger det något i vad Friidrottsförbundets internationella ordförande sa när han stod i en takbar på Avenyn och blickade ut över Vallhalla, Heden och Ullevi:
“It’s so close. So close.”

LYNX - The lynx KaLo was the mascot when Gothenburg hosted the World Championships in Athletics in 1995. The event became a folk festival and a test of Gothenburg as an events city.

In the summer of 1995 Gothenburg was the host city for one of the world’s biggest sporting events: the Athletics World Championships. Johan Wettergren was a runner but during the event he had a totally different job: to be the mascot, KaLo.
“KaLo did somersaults, jumped over obstacles in the arenas, and so on. It was so hot in Gothenburg that week – crazy hot – 60 to 65 degrees centigrade inside the suit. Everyone wanted to be hugged, get an autograph, and take photos…”
The competition was a huge party but it also had another aim: to attract tourists and businesses to the city. A new city-owned company, Gothenburg & Co, had a clear goal that was supported by the city and its businesses: Gothenburg would acquire a new identity as an events city.
During the 1990s tourism to Gothenburg increased a lot, as did the number of offices of foreign companies. Since 1995 Gothenburg has hosted international championships in handball, ice hockey and football. Why? Perhaps there is some truth in what the President of the IAAF said when he stood in a rooftop bar on Avenyn, looking out to the sport facilities Vallhalla, Heden and Ullevi: “It’s so close. So close.”
