The southern arm of the cross and the colour yellow represent the other, more distant and mystical dimension of the land of the dead. Only spirits that achieve great knowledge and power reach this stage. They become nature spirits – simbi – which have enormous powers and can heal the sick and create life.
The objects in the display were used in various rituals intended to cure diseases, counter bad luck or increase fertility. Simbi were especially effective in the lower reaches of the body to counteract problems with the stomach, reproduction and sex. They were also invoked in rituals requiring spiritual rebirth. When members were initiated into a cult, it was common for part of the initiation to involve dramatised encounters with simbi.
In the world of the living, simbi can be found in bodies of water and mountains. They often live in shells, stones and other objects. Sometimes they take human form in people who are twins or have disabilities or albinism. However, yellow is also associated with witches, who use their powers for their own enrichment.
