Det var en gång en provbil
I juli 1924 var Assar Gabrielsson och Gustaf Larson arbetskamrater på SKF. Larson var ingenjör och hade besökt europeiska bilfabriker. Gabrielsson var säljare. De fick en idé: borde inte Sverige, med sin stålindustri och sina låga löner, kunna tillverka konkurrenskraftiga bilar?
Vännerna tog fram en provserie på tio bilar, där denna bil ingick. Den 28 hk starka motorn med fyra cylindrar kunde gasa på i 60 kilometer i timmen. Karossen, med träkonstruktion innanför plåten, är designad av MasOlle. Han var svåger till en SKF-direktör och formgivare, fast mer känd som landskapsmålare. SKF gillade vad de såg och lät Gabrielsson och Larson tillverka bilarna i dotterbolaget Volvo. Den här bilen behövdes inte längre som provbil utan blev tjänstebil åt SKF:s fotograf – och på femton år gick den 40 000 mil.
1959 hade Volvo byggt en halv miljon bilar, sextio år senare är Volvo Sveriges största bolag och känt över hela världen. Trots internationella ägare är det ingen tvekan om att Volvo cars är Torslanda, Hisingen, Göteborg.

Once upon a time there was a test car
In July 1924 Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson were colleagues at the bearing and seal manufacturer, SKF. Larson was an engineer and had visited European car factories. Gabrielsson was a sales agent. They had an idea: shouldn’t Sweden, with its steel industry and low wages, be able to produce competitively priced cars?
Within two years the friends had developed a test series, which included this car. The chassis, built of wood underneath the metal plating, was designed by MasOlle. He was the brother-in-law of an SKF director and a designer, though bettter known as a landscape painter. The 28 hp engine could produce a top speed of 60 km/hr. SKF liked what it saw and commissioned Gabrielsson and Larson to produce cars in its subsidiary, Volvo.
This car was no longer needed as a test car and instead became a company car for SKF’s photographer – and in 15 years it drove 400,000 km. By 1959 Volvo had built half a million cars; 60 years later Volvo is Sweden’s largest company and known around the world. Despite its international owners, there is no doubt that Volvo Cars is still Torslanda, Hisingen, Gothenburg.
