This the typical baluba form of drum, which is also used by their neighbours the Basonge, Batetela, Bena Lulua, Bakusu, etc. Bonne (Les Tambours du C.B., 951, pp. 9-11 and Platses VII, VIII) would class this piece as
Bakusu on strength on strength of the geometrical ornament; the Bakusu are closely related to the Basonge and to the Baluba in culture. (Urua and Warua are only dialactal forms of Uluba and Baliba.) It is probably best to call this Baluba. The small opening beside the upper suspension lug, now closed with gum, is intended to be covered on the inner side by a membrane from a spider´s nest, to give a special sound to the drum.
