Fem kvinnor som läser och målar. Denna typ av litteratur kan ses som ett tecken på nöjesdistriktnes och specifikt bordellernas kulturella roll, åtminstone så som de skildrades i litteratur och bildkonst. De högst rankade kvinnorna framställs visa sin kulturella bildning i form av kunskaper inom bl a bildkonst, teceremoni, musik, sång och dans. Begreppet "de gröna husen" som namn för Edos bordellområde Yoshiwara blev i Väst först känt genom fransmannen Edmond de Goncourts bok om Kitagawa Utamaro från 1891.

This picture comes from a well-known book about the Yoshiwara red-light district of Edo, first published in 1776 and containing pictures of eminent prostitutes. This type of literature was significant of the cultural role of the amusement districts and, more specifically, the bordellos, at least as depicted in literature and pictorial art. The highest-rankning women are shown displaying their cultural accomplishments in the form of knowledge of pictorial art, the tea ceremony, music, singing and dancing, among other things. The expression "the Green houses" (seiro) as epithet for Yoshiwara first become known in the west through the French writer, critic and publisher Edmond de Goncourt´s book on Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753-1806), published in 1891.
