In this painting, the depiction of lingzhi mushrooms (Korean: bullocho - a longevity symbol) and flowers in an ornate flower pot decorated with a bat (a symbol of good fortune), yeouidu (cloud-shaped wish-granting symbols) and lotus flower design, takes up the left half of the painting. On the right there are stacked books. On top of the books, a white porcelain bowl with an underglaze blue chinoiserie design is filled with large fruits, probably yuja (a type of citron symbolising the wish for plentiful male offspring), and below a round bowl is shown placed upside down into a green, bigger bowl. In the foreground, a box with writing utensils, an ink stick between ink stones, a water pot, a brush and a cube-like object that might be a water dropper, can be recognized.

This painting is part of a series of six paintings rendered in ink and colours on paper. This type of painting is called Chaekgeorido, or Chaekgado, and depicts objects that could be found in the study of a Confucian scholar of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) in front of a monochrome, plain background. Stacks of books are the primary subject of the composition and appear in every painting in combination with decorative scholarly objects, as well as plants, fruits and animals with auspicious symbolic meanings, such as abundance, fertility, longevity and good fortune. Shading, linear perspective and reversed perspective were applied to depict the objects. In Korea, the first Chaekgeorido paintings were painted at the royal court by court painters in the late 18th century, but Chaekgeorido paintings soon found appreciation among intellectuals outside of the court and further spread to a wider range of social classes during the 19th century. The wealthy upper and middle classes of that time had a keen interest in collecting antiquities and decorative scholarly utensils and enjoyed having them portrayed in Chaekgeorido paintings alongside books for display in their studies. While earlier Chaekgeorido paintings show books in large bookshelves, later paintings often omit the shelves and depict the books in a stacked form surrounded by various collectables and decorative and scholarly objects as well as fruits, flowers and vegetables with auspicious meanings, as can be seen in these examples. It is possible that these paintings were produced by a professional painter for a scholar of the upper class. They were probably originally mounted on a folding screen.

Anni Kalbak's collection (purchased)
Anni Kalbak (born Anni Steinert Sørensen) was the wife of Dr. Kaj Algot Kalbak (1909–1992), a Danish medical doctor, who worked as chief physician and head of the Department for Clinical Microbiology at the National Medical Center in Seoul from 1958 to 1962. The establishment of the National Medical Center (NMC) was a joint medical project between the Scandinavian countries, the UNKRA (United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency) and the Korean government. The Swedish contribution to the NMC was a continuation of the Swedish Red Cross Hospital in Busan that was operated during and after the Korean war (1950–1958). While living in Korea, Dr. Kalbak built a collection of over 500 objects, including archaeological and ethnographic material and art objects, from a period spanning from the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE) to the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) that he presumably purchased from antique shops. It can be assumed that Anni Kalbak acquired objects for her own collection during this time, perhaps from the same shops. After returning to Denmark, Dr. Kalbak donated his collection to the National Museum of Denmark. Anni Kalbak’s collection of more than 90 objects was purchased by the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in 1987. Her collection includes bronze objects from the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), a great variety of ceramic objects from the Three Kingdoms period, and the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, and a collection of over 40 paintings from the Joseon dynasty. Especially the acquisition of the painting collection held significance for the Museum as there were not many Korean paintings in the collection up to that time.

길운을 상징하는 박쥐, 여의두, 연꽃 무늬로 화려하게 장식된 화병에 불로초와 꽃들이 꽂혀 있는 모양을 화면 왼편에 묘사했다. 오른쪽에는 책이 쌓여 있고 그 위로 중국풍의 청화백자 그릇이 놓였다. 남자 후손의 번창을 염원하는 뜻을 지닌 유자로 짐작되는 큰 과일이 그릇 안에 가득 담겨 있다. 그 아래로는 붉은색의 둥근 그릇을 뒤집어 덮은 초록색의 그릇이 배치되어 있다. 전경에는 먹, 벼루, 연적, 붓 등의 문방구를 담은 상자가 놓여 있다.

종이에 채색한 책거리 그림(책가도)으로, 조선시대 문인의 서재에서 사용하는 기물들을 단색의 무늬가 없는 바탕에 묘사한 것이다. 높이 쌓여 있는 책들이 주요 구성 요소이고 장식성이 강한 문방구, 식물, 과일과 더불어 다산, 풍요, 장수, 복(福)과 같은 길상의 의미를 지닌 동물이 함께 그려졌다. 명암법과 선 원근법, 역원근법을 적용하여 사물을 묘사하였다. 한국에서 책거리 그림은 18세기 후반에 궁중에서 화원(畫員)에 의해 최초로 그려졌고, 곧 궁궐 밖에서도 문인들이 선호하는 주제가 되었으며 19세기에는 민화의 소재로도 널리 유행했다. 이 시기 부유한 중상류계층은 서재를 꾸미기 위한 고동기물(古銅器物)과 각종 장식성이 강한 문방구류를 수집하고 감상하는 취미를 즐겼다. 따라서 이와 같은 진귀한 물건들을 쌓아 올린 책들 옆에 배치하여 그린 책거리 그림을 서재에 두고 실제처럼 연출하기도 한 것이다. 전기의 책거리 그림은 책이 가득 꽂힌 책꽂이를 묘사하는 반면, 후기의 책거리 그림에서는 이 유물에서와 같이 책꽂이가 없이 책을 쌓고 그 주변에 다양한 수집품들과 장식품들, 문방구 그리고 길상의 의미를 지닌 과일, 꽃, 야채를 함께 배치한다. 이 그림들은 직업화가에 의해 상류계층의 문인을 위해 제작되어 원래 병풍으로 꾸며졌을 것으로 추정된다.

안니 칼박 소장 (구입)
안니 칼박은 1958년부터 1962년까지 서울에 위치한 국립중앙의료원에서 근무했던 덴마크인 의사 카이 알고트 칼박 (1909-1992) 박사의 아내이다. 국립중앙의료원은 스칸디나비아의 스웨덴, 덴마크, 노르웨이 3국과 국제연합한국재건단 그리고 한국 정부가 협력하여 설치 및 운영한 공공의료원이다. 스웨덴은 한국전쟁 기간 동안 그리고 그 이후에 부산에 위치한 스웨덴 적십자 야전병원을 운영한 것의 연장선상에서 국립중앙의료원에 기여한 것이었다. 한국에 거주하면서 칼박 박사는 삼국시대부터 조선시대까지 다양한 연대를 아우르는 고고학적 그리고 민족지학적 자료와 예술품을 포함하여 500여 점의 유물을 수집했는데, 이들은 골동품점에서 구입했을 것으로 추정된다. 안니 칼박도 같은 시기에 동일한 골동품점으로부터 개별적으로 유물들을 입수했을 것으로 짐작된다. 덴마크로 귀국한 후, 칼박 박사는 수집품들을 덴마크국립박물관에 기증했다. 안니 칼박의 90여 점의 수집품은 1987년 동아시아박물관에서 구입했는데, 여기에는 고려시대 청동 유물, 삼국, 고려, 조선시대에 걸친 다양한 도자기 유물과 조선시대 회화 40여 점이 포함되어 있다. 특히 이 컬렉션의 입수는 그 당시 동 박물관에서 소장품이 많지 않던 한국 회화 부문의 공백을 메우는 중요한 계기가 되었다.
