Red clay; partly diluted black glaze; white, red and dark green paint. Mouth black except top; outside of handle, lower body and base top black; one row of bars and one of rays on shoulder; most of body white: red meander between narrow green bands right below shoulder, below a decorated grave stele and a mourning, female figure sitting on one of the steps of the stele; one black and one reserved band below; black band around base edge.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
