Where the worlds meet, Där världarna möts

The tomb was a meeting place for the worlds of the living and the dead. A fine tomb consisted of two parts: A chapel at ground level for making offerings to the tomb owner and a sealed burial chamber deep below the ground, where the mummy and burial gifts would be placed.
The link between the two worlds consisted of a false door or a representation of a door, but with no opening. According to ancient Egyptian beliefs, the Ba or soul of the deceased, depicted as a human-headed bird with the facial features of the dead, used the false door for entering and leaving the burial chamber.
Being remembered was one of the most important prerequisites for eternal life and hence, the name and titles of the tomb owner were engraved on the walls of the tomb, sometimes together with a biography.

Graven var den plats där de levandes och dödas världar möttes. En fin grav bestod av två delar: ett kapell i marknivå, där man kunde offra till gravägaren, och en förseglad gravkammare djupt nere i marken, där mumien och gravgåvorna låg.
Länken mellan världarna var en skendörr, en relief som såg ut som en port men utan egentlig öppning. Genom den föreställde sig egyptierna att den dödes ba-själ, avbildad som en fågel med den dödes anletsdrag, kunde ta sig in och ut.
Att bli ihågkommen var en av de viktigaste förutsättningarna för evigt liv. Gravägarens namn och titlar skrevs därför in på gravens väggar, ibland tillsammans med en biografi.
