O249, August 3, 1931, We have received so far 5 consignments of your Archaeological material which we have shown in a special exhibition open to public, I suppose there remait other things which you will ship back to China. I shall be glad to have early announcement. Of the palaeontological material returned here, may I be permitted to tell you our frank opinion. We are very satisfied of the paleobotanical collections serit back by Dr. Halle. The collections are of great utility here for comparison, and his description is also much used. I personally made a collection of Tingia flora from Liuhokou the last spring, and sent it entirely to his Taboratory. The material sent back from Dr. Wiman's laboratory is very incomplete except perhaps the first lot when you | were still here in the Ministry. We have received so far nothing of the Mesozoic and early Tertiery fauna of Shantung, which have already been described in the Palaeontologia Sinica. Now for practical use, Dr. C. C. Young is espe- | cially anxious to have for comparison specimens described in Pal, Sinica C. V. 3 (rodents) C II 3 (deers) and C V 5 (figs). Also > ”skell be very gald if we can have as a loan the original specimens of Macaccus anderssoni. In . general we are desirous to have all type specimens for com- | parison. Would it be possible to make cast of the important types and if necessary let the Survey share the expenses? The Survey will be ablé to return the courtesy by sending to Upsala other specimens or casts of the fossils which we are collecting if so iw desired by Prof, Wiman. - Yours very sincerely, Mg pen

0248 THE NATIONAL GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF CHINA 9 PING MA SSU, WEST CITY, PEIPING, CHINA — SPÅRET Dr, J. G., Andersson; Ostasiatiska Samlingarna, Sveavagen 65, Stockholm, Sweden, Dear Dr. Andersson!- Thark you very much for your letter of June 25th and the enclosures, With regard to Lowe's paper and the estimates, after consultation with Dr: V. K. Ting I agree with the opinion of the committee, and so I wish you will have Bortzell undertake the work, their figure being 2,193:30 Swed. Kr. Owing to the depreciation of silver, we are now in a very difficult position in meeting our print- ing expenses. We shall pay from this year's budget over $800 gold to Mr, Lagrelius for Zdansky's memoir on early Tertiary fossils, As has been communicated to you by Dr. V. K. Ting, we like to reserve and can only spare $5000 silver a year for the printing of the palaeontological or archeological papers by our Swedish friends, Owing to the accumulated debt to Mr. Lagrelius of $800 gold our budget is therefore particular- ly heavy this year. However, I shall do my best to pay any other paper the committee in Stockholm shall decide to print in Sweden within the stated amount besides the old debt but including Lowe's paper, That means we undertake to pay up to $9000 silver for the Swedish contributions in the Palaeontologia Sinica. I think this is all we can do for the present year. The palaeontological study in China has flourished almost out of our expectations, thanks to the good foundations laid by our Swedish friends. At present, there are not less than seven monographs weiting for publication in Peiping, besides those on Choukoutien deposits to be printed by a special fund, 50 we have our hands full and are at a loss how to get enough fund. As you must well know, we sincerely welcome the publication of the papers contributed by our Swedish friends in our series, and in allotting the fund for printing, we have done and shall do our very best to have them published early on the sole consideration of their scientific interest. Yet given the limited fund available and the pressing need of publications, I wonder, since the Crown Prince and other friends in Sweden have done so much in promoting this branch of study, >» whether they might not be able to render their good offices again in procuring some additional financial assistance for the Palaeontologia Sinica from certain guarters in Sweden or else- where, As the cost for printing is so high and the need is so urgent, such help, if fortheoming, will indeed be greatly appre- ciated. Any such additional fund if available will be of course entirely reserved for the printing in Sweden. This is of course a personal wish tentatively suggested to you as an old friend, |
