JAPAN: ARTEFACTS AND IMAGES TELL
Japan: Artefacts and Images tell the story covers the time from the Kofun period (4th century-538) to the end o the 20th century. Our focus is on the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities' extensive collection of objects from urban environments in the Edo period (1615-1868) and the time of nation-building in Japan.
This period coincides with the rule of the House of Vasa and the formation of Sweden as a nation-state. Many phenomena which today are perceived as "typically Japanese" both in Japan itself and internationally, acquired their definitive shape during the Edo period, Japan's cultural history is presented through objects that were used by two social groups, samurais and "townsmen" (chonin, roughly "the middle class"), and these object provide a picture of the contacts between Japan and the rest of the world from the 5th century to the present times. Through a chronological presentation of Japanese objects brought to Sweden from the mid 17th century to the 21st century we illuminate the development of the image of Japan in Sweden.
