Cleaning and conservation report. D-nr 16454012, 8.09.95. Condition: complete with strong and rather complete metallic core. Corrosion on surface is thick, hard, very uneven, dark greyish green with metallic shine in places. Corrosion bumps cover most of surface, formed in layers. Original surface layer, smooth but pitted, is hard dark green, almost black, preserved only in small part of the surface. Partially preserved surface ornamentation. The cutting edge of the axe is heavily corroded and distorted by uneven corrosion. No obvious active corrosion. Dirty surface has some oily/waxy appearance. May have been previously treated. Treatment: cleaned mechanically with scalpel, hard bristle brush and soft small rotating steel brush, under the microscope. Surface corrosion is removed as close possibly to the original surface, where preserved. Surface is degreased to the possible extent with white spirit (alcohol?). Dried. Lightly polished with soft bristle brush and bee's wax.
