Information derived from Bribri visit: Sept 28 – Oct 02, 2023. Feathers likely from a member of the heron/egret family (Ardeidae). The feathers are most likely undyed and unaltered. In Bribri culture, the colors present in the natural world symbolize balance and harmony and are used to treat specific sickness and disease. Color combinations are used by the Bribri as a form of communication and a way to keep the different wards of the universe in balance. Feathers could be adhered to a cotton band using beeswax (information provided from the Bribri visitors) or kautschuk (raw gum - information from original documentation). The cotton bands of these headbands are possibly made from cotton rice bags, a practice of reuse that is common in both historical and modern Bribri communities. Feather headdresses of this style are typically worn during Bribri ceremonies – specifically by the bikàkla, the leader of the ceremony. Bikàkla are individuals from clans with the specific charge to lead ceremonial gatherings and were permitted to wear the headdress outside of performing ceremonial duties.
