Cleaning and conservation report. D-nr 16454012, 8.09.95. Condition: complete, strong metallic core. Dirty with soil particles. Surface is covered with thick, uneven layer of corrosion which consists of smaller and larger bumps, filled with grey, hard waxy substance (concentrated chlorides, most likely ). Surface corrosion products bright green color. Some small, almost uncorroded, spots on surface, where original surface is well preserved. Bright yellow metallic surface can be seen in those places. Under the thick corrosion layer there is rather smooth, but pitted with waxy substance warts, original surface layer. It is partially green, partially bright brown. (copper oxide ). Object has spots of obvious active corrosion - light green/blue powder. High risk for active corrosion in general, due to the concentrated chloride presence. Treatment: cleaned mechanically with scalpel, hard bristle brush and a small soft rotating steel brush, under the microscope. Corrosion removed as close as possible to the original surface. Grey waxy substance removed to the original surface layer, but warts are not excavated. Object was stabilised by immersing in 3 % benzotriazole in ethanol for 48 hours. Rinsed in 95 % ethanol, dried. Surface coating of 10 % Paraloid B 72 in ethanol is applied. After complete drying a coat of thin solution of microcristalline wax in white spirit was applied. Surface polished lightly with a soft bristle brush.
