The signal horn (train horn) is a component of a Kleinlocomotive of the DB-production series 332, built in 1966 by Orenstein & Koppel. The locomotive performed shunting work at small and medium sized train stations of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway). Since 2011 it has been part of the collection inventory of the Bochum Railway Museum, where it once again does shunting work for presentational purposes. The signal horn generates a loud sound with a steady frequency and served the purpose of communicating with acoustical signals in railway traffic and shunting work. The sound is generated when compressed air is blown along a metal plate, causing it to vibrate. The air then exits the signal horn through a trumpet bell. That way a large part of the acoustic energy reaches the hearer.
