During the Old Kingdom, increasingly more resources were spent on the royal tombs. What was once a simple superstructure of sand became large pyramids of stone on top of the tombs. Every king would have at least one pyramid. Some of them had several. More than one hundred pyramids have been found in Egypt.
Building a pyramid was a huge project that involved a workforce of thousands. A large number of scribes were needed for drawing up and maintaining lists of wages, materials and supplies. Accordingly, the pyramids contributed to the development of society and writing.
In ancient Egypt, all power was given to the kings who ruled the country from the capital of Memphis. Relatives or friends of the king were appointed to the highest positions. In return for their loyal service, the king would give them a fine tomb, often in close proximity of his own pyramid.
The objects on display in this room come from such tombs.

Under Gamla riket lades allt mer resurser på de kungliga gravarna. Det som först hade varit en enkel överbyggnad av sand utvecklades till stora pyramider av sten ovanpå gravkammaren. Varje kung hade åtminstone en pyramid. Några hade flera. Man har hittat sammanlagt över hundra pyramider i Egypten.

Vid den här tiden var makten koncentrerad till kungen, som styrde landet från huvudstaden Memfis. De högsta tjänsterna innehades av släktingar eller vänner till kungen. Som tack för trogen tjänst fick de fina gravar, ofta i närheten av hans pyramid.
