are other things to dö here, There are certainly hundreds of Caves in this lsabyrinth of limestone islets and there is natu- rally the possibility that one of then can contain something very välnable, But with their black vertical shafts running down to unseasurable depths they mostly. look very uninviting. Last vonday, the 24, we sterted oat for the eastern islande' sand snchored et the SW end of Ile Longue., The cireumnavigation thet efternoon of Ile Rousse with the motörboat gave nothing. Still with my experiences fröm the Hongkon, Islands I had a working hypothesis, I wanted large sandy besches opening towards the occan., $o the 25th we went with the moötorboat out in the dpen sea and managed to land on the south side of Ile Danh Do La, Here is en enorsous plage söre thap two kiloseters long, I had hoped to find old pottery in the vegetation-covered sendy streteh of landt-2-3 nm above the high water mark oas is so of ten the case in the Hongkong erea, Nothing, absolutely nothing, in spite of several hours persistent searek: But here Tran came tö my help in a most efficient manner, He brouwcht with as from Manoi a stone ex, end this we had show to our men so they knew what we ere out for, Fortana- tely one of our sampaniers is a native of this island, Mc kad telked to one of the natives and this man produced a stone ax of the asymmetric type characteristic of this part of the For Bast, A little wiile later a woman sold us two wore axes of the same type and soon we had five exes frog fonir different sellers, One of these is & shouldcred ax, another of the characteristics of the region,

0240 ARA - It now seemed higly probaäble that there was a site some- where, still none of the sellers would tell ns the exact prove- Rance of the stone axes, The first man töök us to u land slide slope ntterly sbsarU except för the thunderbolt folklore Cofmected with thebe things and spread all över tie globe, When standing at the beach I had a queer foregathering that there was a site at a rock cliff far inland and when reaching there I found a deposit exhibiting for a length of fally hundred meters a Sältäre deposit of 0.5-1.00 thickness and filled with an amazing quantity of potsherds of a prehistorie" type, In half an hours tine I collected some of the best sherds and found quite a variety of types, kost of them plain but tro sherds wigh an interesting inciscd gt€ometrie pattern, As a whole this pottery is execedincly frishle and diffienlt to handle, The 28th we returned to this site and passed the whole day in & testdigging to see the real value or the site, When clearing the ground from bushwood we found on the surrsse one stone ax and two big pebbles with interesting grooves apparently made by Man, I have no doubt that this is the pluce where the uther five stone axes have been found when excavating for the Deceuville vail line running through the site, Regular excevation was started and we got not only heäaps of pottery of various kinds but also some grinding stones, I have little doubt that lots of stone things will be found during the large excavation to follow,

pan Å va Chai, January 30, 1938. R 1 now ask permission to report to you on my first ten days of reconnaissance by boat among the islands, Thanks to the wonderful understanding snd help of H, Lapicque I have been sble to dispose et a very reasonable price of a very suitable small flotilla consisting of the following craft: The stesalanunch "Le Touriste" with eabin and ecooking accomodation, A sisll sotorbogt of such shallow draft that it can approach the na.-erous suiflats. Two seaspans, ont för M. Tran and another for the servants. Zz January 19 I devoted to Port Courbet — slås, with very little fesalt, and in the Sttamioön we went to Ile des Cerfs where at the sönth point we found imvense sasses of young pottery and nwsweroas saall stupas of red elay, about half - meter high, We bring six of tnena with us. I then turned to the nuwsberless and very picturesque limestone islands in the hope of finling deposits in the ecaves. We have explored ei ht of thes, small and large, but the result has been extremely negative? In a conple of the large ones there is some stratified sediment, probably phosphorite förasd froa the dröppings of bats. Apart from the tiny bones of those smell animals I have found nothing a in these sediuents, I will continue the search smong the caves but if I find nothing efter having visited, say 25, I may give up as there
