This is not Nupe, nor made anywhere near Bida, but is an Ibibio doll of a style fashionable in the last 20 or 30 years and made at Ikot Ekpene, a large inland market town, whence dolls of this kind are exported to other parts of ibibio country (Sometimes being put to ritual use, I believe), and also traded by Hausa traders to other parts of Nigeria where they are sold to Europeans. The shortened arms held forwards, with palms held upwards at right angles to the arms, represent the peculiar Ibibio dancing stance. W.B.Fagg. 21.9.57.
