"The fishing is usually done from canoes, which gives me reason to describe these vessels here. As there are no trees growing in the swamp area that could be suitable for the production of canoes, batwa must be comfortable walking up the solid shore of the Kapata Peninsula to fell suitable canoe timber. There are several different trees there, which can be used for this purpose, but Parinarium curatellifolium is most desirable. If a swamp wants to make a canoe, he asks some friends to follow him up to the beach, where they search right for a suitable tree with a straight trunk, which does not branch until high above the ground. The tree is felled with axes of an appearance shown in Fig. 97. These axes have, as can be seen in the picture, a rather narrow chisel-shaped blade, which is inserted into a vertical hole in the shaft. The angle which the longitudinal axis of the shaft forms with an imaginary line from the center of the shaft hole to the center of the ax edge is always less than 90 °, which batwa consider to increase the force of the ax. The shaft of the ax pictured here is 50 cm. long, and the ax blade has a length of 17.2 cm." (p. 202, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
