"In some strains, e.g. babisa, it is believed, however, that Leza leads the destinies of men and that the soul after death is received by him. Life after death then takes shape in many ways as an ideal happy earthly life. Therefore, even while still in mortal life, one should praise and promise Leza's name. At awemba, on the other hand, the passive Leza towards the people is not worshiped in the form of songs or sacrifices. These people turn with sacrifices and prayers to their tribal deities, who are the spirits of deceased chiefs or ancestors; even their fetishes bring the sacrifices, even of men. The religion of the Awemba people is thus typically animistic. One of the awemba people's fetishes, called lilamfia, is depicted and described in "The Great Plateau etc." p. 92 and 93. It was used especially during warships, and to this fetish was sacrificed the first prisoner, who was taken. By a Grogan, similar human sacrifices refer to fetishes. I managed with great difficulty with the Batwa people to acquire a very powerful fetish (fig. 182), which is of the same type as the lilamfia fetish mentioned above. It was, according to the batwa chief from whom I bought it, extremely powerful and was used in hunting, but I have reason to suspect, because of the great resemblance of the fetish to lilamphia, that it was also used in war, although they did not want to tell me that. . As I shall shortly show, in that case it is quite probable that human sacrifices also took place in its honor." (p. 291, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
