Korg. Köpt. So-called Navajo Wedding basket. This type of basket was originally made by Navajos for themselves, but since the high development of Navajo weaving, they have almost entirely abandoned the craft, and now trade textiles for these baskets which are made by the Pah-utes. The basket are used by many tribes for utilitarian purposes, but among the Navajo also figure in ceremonies. Their use in the marriage ceremony has given them their common name. They are also used inverted with a yucca drumstick as a drum in certain Navajo ceremonies. The dyes are native, the sewing material probably willow splints on what appears to be foundation of willow rods. Geoffrey Turner, Pitt Rivers Museum, i brev 2.9.51: The Ute and Paiute both employ a triangular foundation consisting of three rods of sumac (Rhus). Navajo basketry is unique in using a triangular foundation of two rods of sumac, the top of the triangle being formed by a bunche of softer yucca leaf. Ref.: Douglas, F.H. (1939): Types of Southwestern coiled basketry. Denver Art Museum: Indian leaflet No. 88; stew art, O.C. (1938): Navaho basketry as made by the Ute and Paiute. AA 40:4. 10.9.51: Vid undersökning visat sig ha två strängar. (L-n.)
