The Hongkong & Shanghai Bank ; S Professor DraJ G.Andersson; Ostasiatiska Samlingarna Sveavägen 65 STOCKHOLM F Dear Professor Andersson, Having just come back to Peking from a journey to the South, I had the great pleasure to meet here Mr .Karlbeck which visit reminded me of the heavy debt on my conscience, namely that I have not yet answered your very kind letter dated March 1l2th nor thanked you for your kindness in sending me your book "Der Drache und d: fremden Teufel" which I read with much pleasure. I keve long postponed writing to you waiting for better news to give you relating to the local conditions and to interestin; objects to be founå on the Peking market. One could. not say that onditions in Peking are better than they were at your time, and especially after a visit to Shanghai and Nanking where everybody seems just bursting with life and fervour, Peking gives one more than ever the impression of a very beautiful, but nevertheless a tomb, or a grave: yard, if you prefer, I am glad that I can give you better news about interesting objeci which have turned up lately and gome of which have come into my possession,. Scythian Sculpture. The most särärtant find to report is that of a Scythian stone in Outer Mongolia. Prof Haenisch, the sinologue from the Leipzig University, has visited the site this s r, and has brought excellent photos with him, I am certain he will b: only too glad to you have prints of them, The central figure is a man sitting on: carpet with the foreparts of two deers on both sides. Unfortunately, there is no inser: tion and, as fas as I know, also no circumstantial evidence as to the age of the stone Scythian Bronces., A large collection of about 50 pieces has just been acquired by klr.H — H.Jayne for the Pennsylvania Museum at Philadelphia. Most of them have been found in Mongolia and near the Mongolian border, Mr.Larsen through whose hands they came has pr mised me first choice of the next objects which he hopes to get very soon through his Mongolian friends. I have got myself quite a number of small objects of Scythian chara ter. I will write about them later and send you photographs as well. I am now more con = vinced than ever that Scythian art tradition survived up to Sung and probably Mongol times and I am seeing the same tradition in the gilt bronce figure of a deer which I got from the Suiyuan district. I am enclosing a pljotograph marked WYBID. Uppor part of the figure of a kneeling deer. Material: thin bronce, hoavil gilt and volished. 53 cm long, about 40 em high. Frobably one of iwo deers facing the Wheel of the Law in a symbolic representation of Buddha proaching in the dseer park at Benares. This figure must be pre-Ming, probably Sung and belonging to the Kulturkreis of the Kin or Liao Tatars. Price: mex.3 500e- Kansu Pottery. Quite a number of them have turned up here and the majority has come in my hands through a Frenchman who came here from Kansu in July. They have been dug up in the neighbourhood of Ho=chou at the following places - I am giving the Frenchman's transscription: 3in-tien, Nin-sin-tien, Ta-ouang-tehouang, Pei-ta-sseu, Sou-la-pa and Ma-ying. All are very ggod specimens in splendid conditiom and many of them are quite new types. I showed them = or at least photos and a few pots - to Mr. Karlbeck who was egtremely interested, I am sending you photographs of twenty of tnem and I am offering fr SHtfLE?ekiänEhoSge S9llgokipn pottery for måéx.$ 40000

SUNGLIN PEKING Codes : A.B.C. 6th, Bentley's, Mosse's Bankers: The Hongkong & Shanghai Bank ; And pagse This is a special price for you. The few pieces here in the market are fetching from 300 to 700 $ a piece and there are very few amongst them who can be eompared to the objects in my collection. I should be obliged åf you would kindly not mention this price to any dealers etc. - Tomb Figures. The most interesting news I got through Prof.Ma Heng from the National U versity. He has been in Japan this summer and he told me that Japanese archaeolågists have opened a supposed Han tomb in Korea which was full of phallic little clay figures male figures of absolutely grotesque character with the penis erected up to their head I mention it because I saw here two pairs of big.sized clay figures, égach consisting o: a male and a female, about 60 cm high, absolutely naked and the hair done up in a knot and the arms formed apart. These figures - there is nothing phaålic about them = were: an absolute riddle to me as wellmas to my Chinese friends. The idea of a naked figure seemed so absolutely un-Chinese to all of us that Prof Ma Heng's report came aksekuktak as a surprise. No report has been published, as far as I knows. to be” Archaeological Work is rather more difficult now than before and will km have Na dar ried out with Chinese collaboration, under Chiness supervision and for Chinese museums But one would be thankful if-onky- some archaeological work would be done somehow. I am toopressed with other obligations just at the moment, as that I could write mo! in detail, but you will probably get another letter from me in a short time, and I hop a better one. If you want any of the objects ofeered in this letter, please let me know by cable and arrange with your Legation here that I may get the money against delivery. Hoping this letter is reaching you in the best of health, I am, dear Professor, ja.
