I want personally to describe the ceramics, but the stonr inplements an the metal objects whtl be studied ana described by other specialists. I have älso carefully removed the Boll content of thepots and soil gamples will be carefully examined microscopically in the hope of finding some remeins of graine or other vegetable substances which w were probably kept in these pots. 30 far I have unpacked oniy about half of the whole materi al and it will not be pos:ible to handle the rest , before we reach the more spacious future gquarters which will be ready early in the summer. Our Crownprinee, who es you know, is a sincere and able student of Far Eastern arechaeology, will start in May on & round the worlé voyage. He will , accompanied by the Crownprincess, first go to the United States, where he will be present at tne unveiling of th John Ericson monuments je ie the official part of his migsion, and after that he will go to see those Eastern lands for which he hes been longing during many yesre, In September he will be in Japan and about the lst of: Yetober the roval couple will reach Peking. The Crownprince has asked me to meet him there, -ané I an naturally delighted to äffer such humble services as will be within my power. The Crownprinece plans to: stay about two months in hina, mostly in Peking + when making excurslons in öl: ferent directions, to inner Mongolia ( Hallong ÖOsso), to Tatung, to Honan, Shantung, etc. He will also visit all the scientific institutes in Peking anä I feel A surdhe will be delighted to see te splendid PP. U. M. CO. and I am convinced that you all will like him, as he ig the most charming persön ande rarely ecrnest and thorovgh student of a tigquities anéä art. After the Crownprince hag left China for India I hope to be able to go tö Japan to study the really remarkeble Neolothic materiel of tnat country | Hubert Schmidt has recently written a most important paper proving wonderful relationship of the Neolothic of Japan with that of furoves Some of his fects are really astounding). When returning home in February or Mareh I will stay in irkutsk and Krassnojarsk to study the arehaeologicel collections kept in these Places. É : Part of the scientific work with the Kansu collections will be handed over to Puropean areheeologists, but there is very much me to do, and the earliest time I can th of starting for urkestan will be newyear!s time 1928. Lear Poctor Black, do not think that I hesitate for a moment, but I feel very heavily the responsability to watch the important material already in my hands. Posribly you will find yourself in a somewhat similar position, as I tnink that also the skeleton material in your hands will reguire considerable time; before it ig fully described. Kinély write me at your earliest conveniencé to tell what you think about starting in ihe early part of 1928: For the rest I hppe we will be able to go over the whole question in full detail, when we meet in Pek ng in the early autumn. PA —-— ——-— B-- —— Fhen lovking through my coreespondence I notice to my deep regret that I had failed to instruct Doctor Wong about handing over to you copies of our joint paper " Preliminary Report

0080 "Stockholm äpril 6th 1926. Doctor Davidson Black, Department of Anatomy, Peking Union Medical College, Peking China. Dear Doctor Bleck, Vares | I was delighted to receive the 26th inst. your letter of February 9th which haå been evidently long on the way, what is only natural during the present perturbed position of China. I am delighteå to learn from your letter that there is good prospect for our joint expedition into Central Asia and that you probably by this tine have alreedy gone over the matter in detail with Mr. "mbree of the Rockefeller Foundation. It goes without” saying tnaet I am only too anxious to go into Chinese Turkestan and stay there for two or three years and I am glad to confirm that my Swedish frienés are fully determined to äv their very best in backing my efforts. However, I must tell you that I gee little chance for a start next January, as the preperations for the scientific study and deseription of my Kansu collection have taken much more time than than originally expected. After my arrival here it soon became evigent that the funds at my disposal for laboratory work and also the laboratory quarters were entirely unsatisfactory and that some more permanent arrangements hag to be made. S After months of negotiations I have now arriveå at a definite-and quite satisfactory result. The Swedish government has offered me & research position with no duties except studying anå åeseribing the Kansu collections end eventvelly undertaking new journeys in China. I will be entirely free to make any arrangement for scientific cooperation with my Chinese colleegues and I will be glad to discuss the details of such cooperation, when I arrive in Peking about the lst of September. 1 have been given very spacious and comfortable quarters, where I will be sBefe at least for the next ten years, and a sum of 20,000 crowns has been put at my disposal for buying such literature as is not to be found in the existing seientific libraries of Sweden. : You will see that the people here have been very nice and taken an active interest in supporting our archaeolocical work a 7 Fox the present we are busy withrleabelling and
