Krigare

Romersk krigare med stora, bakåtstrukna mustascher och tvärklippt, lätt krusat skägg. På huvudet har han en plymagerad hjälm med uppdraget,spetsigt framparti. Vid sidorna under hjälmen skymtar flikar till hjässkydd. Huvudet och överkroppen är vridna åt vänster. Rustningen är nertill försedd med ett övre lager av små, dekorativt formade, halvrunda flikar samt ett undre lager av glest anbringade, rektangulär, flikar. Höger arm är krökt och dragen bakåt. Handen har troligtvis hållit en lans eller liknande.

Med vänster hand håller krigaren en sköld framför sig. Skölden är prydd med en enkel, till synes slät kant samt ett grekiskt kors. I mitten, mellan korsarmarna, sitter små spetsar. Vid vänster ben ses en del av knotig trädstam. Kroppstyngden förefaller vila på bägge benen, vilka är stövelklädda.

Skulpturen och bakstycket är snidade i ett stycke. Armarna är snidade separat och sitter fästade vid bålen med dymlingar. Bakstycket är profilsvängt och baksidan är slät. Nedtill är bakstycket framdraget så att det bildas en kraftig sockel på vilken figuren står. Sockeln är enkelt ornerad på sidorna. Bakstycket fortsätter snett uppåt och bildar en bred platta ovanför krigarens huvud.

Bortsett från smärre skador är skulpturen välbevarad.

Text in English: Warrior clad in Roman armour, with large, swept-back moustache and slightly curly beard cut straight across. The figure wears a plumed helmet drawn up in front to a point. Flaps can be seen along the sides of the helmet. The head and torso are turned to the left. The lower section of the armour is fitted with an outer layer of narrow decorative semicircular flaps plus a lower layer of widely-spaced rectangular flaps. The right arm is bent and pulled back slightly. The hand probably held a lance or similar weapon. The warrior holds an oval shield in front of his left hand. The shield has a smooth, plain border and is decorated with a simple Greek cross. Small flat triangular points emanate from the middle of the cross and nestle between the two arms of the cross. Beside the left leg there is a knotty tree trunk. The weight of the body rest on both feet.

The sculpture is carved from a single piece of wood, except for the arms which are carved separately and attached to the trunk with dowels. The figure is placed in front of a profiled back-board, with a smooth reverse side, which is drawn forward at the bottom to form a robust base upon which the figure stands. The sides of the base are simply decorated. At the top the back-board continues above the heads to form a wide plate-like section over the warriors'' head.

Aside from minor damage the sculpture is well preserved.
