F 0635 Friar Park, Henley-on-Thames, ENGLAND. löth August, 1952, Prof, J,. G. Andersson, Ostasiatiska Samlingarna, Sveavagen, Stockholm. SWEDEN e Dear Prof. Andersson, I am enclosing photographs of the two pieces that Mr, Karlbeck obtained for me in China and that have come safely to hand, His Royal Highness might perhaps care to keep these photographs as a record, The pieces are of great interest. In view of the theory now held in Peking that some of our Ting pieces are really Chi-chou wares, the larger of the two pieces definitely establishes what is Northern Ting ware. Although it does not greatly resemble the ware of the copper-bound bowls that we have hitherto called Ting, it appears to share many of the characteristics of the white wares found at Samarra. The smaller piece was made as its inseription indicates at Kuei chi, in Chekiang. This place is the same as the Yueh-chou of the T'!ang Dynasty. From the begin- ning of the Sung Dynasty right down to the establishment of the Republie (1911), it was called "Kuei ehi"; now it has been absorbed in the prefecture of Shao-hsing Fu (chekiang). I am delighted with the pieces, and should like to express my appreciation and my thanks to His Royal Highness and to the Syndicate for enabling me to secure them. In due course, will you be good enough to let me know what I owe the Syndicate and the Museum for Mr. Karlbeck!'!s time and trouble in getting them? I saw Mr. Karlbeck several times during his recent visit here. I had already written to him to China on the subject of his trip to Macao, and while he was here, I was able to explain at greater length what I had written. With kind regards, and many thanks for your assistance,
