kärl, skål, Porcelain bowl with spout decorated in underglaze blue floral design

This bowl has the shape of an ordinary food bowl (Korean: sabal) but has a spout attached to one side of the body. The lip of the bowl is flared and rolled outward at the edge. The body has gently curved sides that bulge at the belly. The bowl rests on a foot, which slightly undercuts the body. The tube-shaped spout has been carved on the exterior to create a faceted form. The upper half of the bowl is decorated in underglaze blue with a flower placed at the opposite side of the spout and two flower and leaf designs placed on each side. Another flower was painted in underglaze cobalt blue at the centre of the interior of the bowl. The glaze has a grey tinge, and the surface is rather dark and dull from staining and wear. Remains of a red-brown substance can be seen on the inside of the bowl. The bowl was fired on kiln grit.

This bowl was used for holding and pouring liquids. It is possible that it was used for preparing tea or medicine.
