Animal mummies, Djurmumier

The Egyptians believed that the gods could manifest themselves in the form of individual or species of animals such as ibis birds, falcons and cats.
Animal cults were popular in the Late Period. Breeding and mummifying animals became a lucrative business for the temples. Pilgrims bought animals that were mummified and presented as gifts to the gods, sometimes accompanied by a prayer or message. The animal mummies were buried in long underground galleries.
Sometimes, beloved pets would also be mummified in the hope that it would give them the possibility of an eternal afterlife. Mummified pet dogs, baboons and gazelles, have been found in graves from different time periods.

Egyptierna föreställde sig att gudar kunde uppenbara sig som vissa djur. Det kunde handla om enskilda individer eller hela arter, som till exempel ibisfåglar, falkar och katter.
Djurkulterna fick ett uppsving under Sentiden, då uppfödning och mumifiering av djur blev en lönsam verksamhet för templen. Pilgrimer köpte djur som mumifierades och överräcktes som gåvor till gudarna, kanske tillsammans med en bön eller ett meddelande. Djurmumierna begravdes i långa underjordiska gallerier.
I enstaka fall lät man också mumifiera älskade husdjur för att ge dem en möjlighet till evigt liv. Mumifierade hundar, babianer och gaseller, som helt klart har varit husdjur, har hittats i gravar från olika tidsperioder.
