Cup mouth; narrow neck; sloping shoulder; cylindrical body, tapering downwards; disc base. Red clay; black glaze. Mouth black except top; one row of bars and one of rays on shoulder; reserved panel with meander between bands right below shoulder; on body a woman standing next to a pyre, holding torches; reserved band below; lower body and base top black.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
