- Page Two - geology at this university an excursion to some of the loca- lities from where he has reported loess-like deposits, små described in "DEPOSITS OF POSSIBLY LOESSIAL ORIGIN IN WEST- EFRN AND NORTHWESTERN SZECHUAN BASIN", by James Thorp and Daniel S. Dye. The said deposits are undoubtedly very 10ess- like and would then, from our experience in Northern China, be approximately of Mousterian-Aurignacian age. During this first excursion I was fortunate to find in one of these depo- sits a number of chipped stones which most likely show chip- ping made "by human hand. One of them is a large and quite typical coup-de-poing and it is quite likely that two or three more are to be interpreted as undoubted artifacts. The important feature of these finds is that all these specimens show heavy incrustations of exactly the same kind as the 10ess-puppehen of the same 1l0ess deposit. In fact, there are all kinds of transitions from typical loess-puppchen to heav- ily incrusted pebbles and from these to incrusted human imple- menbts. I cannot help feeling that such a result of the very first day carries with it a certain promise. We are fortunate to be absolutely the first scientific pioneers examining the prehistory of this most im- portant province and I think I would prefer to continue the work rather than to go to Japan where I am at the very best only covering a beaten track. t the Japanes For the present moment I only wish to express to the Committee how I feel towards the new prospects here in Szechuan, It is quite possible that after a couple of months here I will find the enthusiasm of my collaborators cooling down and then I go to Japan - "Qui vivra, verra!" In the meantime I write very friendly letters to Hamada and Umehara keeping them in good spirits. On the other hand I have cancelled the whole American lecturing program as I found it impossible to hold up the American universities indefinitely waiting for develop- ments of my field wori here. I now respectfully ask for the support of the Committee on the following point 1: I would highly appreciate a telegram addressed to Baron Beck-Friis telling that the Committee approves of my attitude towards the Szechuan prospects and the agreement reached with Chinese authorities after very lengthy and diffi- gult negotiations. Such a telegram can be worded simply "Agree. Karlgren". That I will count as a vote of confidence Ob”
