This hat is a type of gat (man’s brimmed hat), called baekrip (white hat) in Korean. It comprises of a slightly narrowing cylindrical-shaped crown with a flat top (Korean: chongmoja) and a round and curved shade (Korean: yangtae) attached to the crown. This hat might originally have had two straps attached to the lower edge of the crown for fastening the hat under the chin. The frame was made of finely sliced and woven bamboo covered with a thin fabric cloth, possibly ramie. Where the crown meets the brim, a layer of black lacquer(?) was applied to the interior of the bamboo frame. This type of hat was worn during times of mourning together with white mourning clothing. In Korea, the colour white traditionally symbolises purity and frugality and is also associated with mourning and death.
