This is a type of headband (Korean: manggeon) for holding the hair together when tied up in a topknot and for holding the headgear (such as a man’s brimmed hat, called gat, or a skullcap) on top of it in place. It consists of an upper band (Korean: dang) and a lower band (Korean: pyeonja) with long tying strings at each corner for fastening the manggeon around the head, a net covering the forehead (Korean: ap) and a part covering the back of the head (Korean: dwi). It also has two small rings (Korean: gwanja) attached to the lower band. The tying strings were laced through the rings and tied to the topknot. The manggeon is made of woven horsehair; each section displays a different weaving. The lower band is reinforced with white fabric strips. Manggeon was an essential part of the headgear worn by men during the Joseon period. The material of the ornaments on the manggeon, such as the gwanja, indicated the status of the wearer.
