Dear Professor Andersson, I should have written to you some time ago, but I had been told that you were absent from Stockholm. I have recently received a letter from the Crown Prince in which he sends a very kind message from yourself. I much appreciate your expression of welcome in view of my visit to Sweden next -March. «Perhaps His Royal Highness has mentioned that the lecture, which I delivered on the 27th. November last, to inaugurate our new department of Chinese Art and Archaeology, was largely concerned with a tribute to your own achievements. Some slides,made from photographs kindly lent to mes from your Museum, were used to illustrate the lecture. An epitome of the lecture is being published shortly in Indian Art and Letters, and among the illustrations there must, of course, be included some photographs of the painted pre-historic pottery. In the belief that you were absent from Stockholm, and as the matter was urgent, I wrote to Dr. Palmgren,and again on the 9th. inst. to the Secretary of your Museum, asking if permission might be granted to publish 3 of the photographs which I now have on loan, viz. 27, I96, and a view of-a neolithic burial. Today I have received a letter from Dr. Palmgren saying that it is contrary to your rule to allow reproduction of photographs not yet published by yourselves. When I made the request, I did not suppose that these particular photographs had not yet been published. Of course, I quite understand the rule; but at the same time I feel that I would be lacking in proper respect to yourself and the Östasiatiska Samlingarna, if I were to publish examples of this pottery from other collections as illustrations to the lecture, without first making sure that none of your own examples are available for the purpose.
