-” 02554 December 1llth, 1931. Dr. Wong Wen Hao, The Director of The Geological Survey of China, 9, Ping Ma Ssu, West City, FI BR rg Dear Dr Wong, I want to give you a report on our arrangements with reference to the Palaeontologia Sinica and matters connected with this publication. åfter the receipt of vour letter of August 3rd we ordered Lowe”s paper to be prepared by the Börtzell printing office, in accor- dance with your instructions. Your letter of August 31st brought up a auestion which I have discussed repeatedly with Professor Halle during the last two vears. The Malmö-firm /Malmö Ljustrycksanstalt/ referred to in vour letter, has been in our thoughts as an alternative to Lagrelius” institute /Generalstabens Litografiska anstalt/. We knew that some fairly good work had been done by the Malmö-people but that other of their products are less setisfactory, as is naturally often the case with a firm trying to expand. åt the meeting of our committee October lst I asked for per- mission to undertake parallel test-prints in the two institutes, Malmö and Lagrelius, and it wqs decided to try both half-tone and heliotype,

O2355 b s2- as it seems that nowadays h&liotype-plates can be made just as cheap as half-tone. This test has been arranged in such a way that one of Palmgren” s plates was chosen for the experiment and this one plate will be reproduced by both institutes and in hlaf-tone as well as heliotype. The result of this experiment will be forwarded to you together with offers of cost. Our committee will meet again in the early part of January and then I hope to have the whole experiment ready to be forwarded to you. It goes without saying that no step will/ be taken until we have your opinion on this expe”i- ment. Witn reference to the different printing offices I will already now explain to vou certain practical considerations, The Lagrelius” nor I tute with the allged Börtzell printing office has always been stiff in their prices, as is often the case with an old and well-astablished firm. But on the otber hand, they have, apart from their good work and the advantages of printing in Stockholm, offered us long credit, what is rather important in our dase. I am afraid that any other firm, abroad or in Malmö, will ask for more immediate payment than is the case with the Lagrelius” group. For this reason my present policy is to invite competitive offers from other firms and then to try to persuade the Lagrelius” group to offer usr the same terms, I cannot hide from you that these negotietions have been sometimes rather difficult, but I feel strontåy that I am acting in our common interest. I herewith enclose a note on the Swedish publications to Palaeon- tologia Sinica which ere at present in preparation. During this autumn I have together with Professor Karlgren spent much tire in negotiating with Wiman about the return of specimens, the sen- ding of types specimens to Peking and preparing of plaster-casts. I brought tne matter before the committee at the last meeting with a very strong re- commendation to conform with your wishes as far as possible, The Crown-
