ÅK, Jing about dvUur CoRVersat lod with regard to the settlement of our last printing account with Mr, Lagrelius, and he also agreed to your friendly proposal to make an end of the unpleasant business, but in the meantime I have received another letter from Mr, Lagrelius a copy of which I en- close herewith, From this you will see that Mr. Lagrelius has not at all abandoned his usual tactics, and in addition threatened to "disturb" the arrangement made for Sino-Swedish co-operation, dCha- racteristically also he asks me to answer by telegram whilst he has not yet taken the trouble to reply to many letters of mine some of which date back as far as 1928. Under the circumstance payment of hisclast it will only encourage him to persist in his bDullyling methods; sot regretfully withdraw my promise mads at our last meeting, I do not think I ought to pay him until a clear arrangement is made with regard to future printing, and a formal explanation is glven Dy MP; Lagrellus for his extremely discourteous behalviour - the spirit expressed in the last paragraph of his letter is almost as bad as its grammar, I feel sure however that Mr, Lagrelius cannot possibly represent the views of the Swedish Committee as a whole. Ås we have. failed to get any reply from Dr. Andersson to our pro- posal after | months” waiting, we have decided that His Royal High- ness, the Swedish Crown Prince, should be informed, for it was His Royal Highness, as Chairman of the Swedish Committee, who wrote to Dr. Ting and myself in Dec, 3lst 1921 accepting the finally arrange- ments made. At my request Dr, Ting has written a long letter to Hig Royal Highness explailning all the points at issue. I enuctiose it herewith for your persual.,. Will you kindly forward it on behalf? To what has been said in that letter I have very little to add ex- cept this, Please tell Mr. Lagrelius that such explicit promise made in that letter signed by the Crown Prince as well as by himself ( as quoted in Dr. Ting”s letter), cannot be so easily "disturbed" as Mr, basfrellus seems to think; ant lf he tries te do sö, We-Witt spare no=effort to insist upon our rights. As I have told you tt my letter of ll May, in making the necessare arrangements to enable Dr, Andersson to make excavations and take the specimens to Sweden, both Dr; Ting and myself took upon ourselves a great responsibility and we have been repéeatedly criticised for our action. Our defence has always been that not only a set of duplicates will be returned to China, but also we Have tie sole right to publish the seientitie

Only a little more than 3 7.000 have been used for printing other monographs not connected with Dr. Andersson”s work, In the above figures the interest on the S 35.199 has not been included because the Peking Publication Fund included contributions other than Dr. Andersson” s and the whole was deposited in the banks here, making 1t-dlfifiiealt to calculate the separate interest tue to each POrtion,. Also Du, Andersson$ contributions were made by monthly instalments which make accurate conputation of interest av very laborious business. At most however the total interest amounts only to a few thousand dollars which have been used for printing Grabau”s MOROgrapbas ft Dr, Andersson so desires, we can of course furnish him with more accurate accounts, This statement ought to convince Dr, Andersson that not only the Peking Fund is really exhausted, but that nearly 3/l of the total (including interest) was used for his own works. O3LI1, 2 320 Oct; 1930, results. You will therefore understand our feeling when Mr. Lagrelius threatens to envolve our personal honour as well &s our public duty, . The failure of Dr, Andersson to answer Dr, Ting” s letter makes me think that, being absorbed in his own work and not having his file in order, he may be possibly under some false impression about the publication funds. Ås Dr, Ting has said in his letter to the Crown Prince there are 2 separate funds: one in Stockholm and the other in "Peking. The former was formed by contributions from 2 Swedish gentlemen (upon whom the Chinese Government conferred decorations) to the Palaeontologia Sinica without any restriction as to the papers to be printed, i. e. we could use the money for any mono- graph in the said publication, The Peking fund was formed by monthly contributions from Dr. Andersson out of his salary (other funds were added to it afterwart) and was originally intended to be exclusively used for printing works on Dr. Andersson”s material, But as it turned out, Dr, Andersson”s material was to be worked out by Swedish scientists who preferred to have the results print- ed in Sweden, therefore we kept the Swedish contributions made in crowns in Sweden for printing monographs on Dr. Andersson”s material and used the Peking fund for general printing purpose with the understanding that in case if the fund in Sweden is in- sufficient for Dr, Andersson”s purpose, we should use also part of the Peking fund, At that time according to Dr. Andersson”s own estimates we had more than enough money in hand. When later on Dr, Andersson made his discoveries in Kansu, he wrote to Dr, Ting asking him to reserve the entire Peking Fund as well as the fund in Sweden exclusively for printing papers on his collec- tioems.,. Ir a letter dated 9 Feb. 1925 Dr, Ting told Him fra t-it was undesirable and Dr, Andersson subsequently gave the idea up himself. Herewith I enclose a copy of Pr. Ting”s letter to re- mind Dr, Andersson of the fact. In reality however the Peking fund has been very largely used up for the printing of Dr, Andersson”s own material. The following is an approximate account:- Fund contributed by Dr. Andersson $ 35.199.80 Expenditure in printing works on Dr. Andersson”s material:- | 1, Andersson & Black”s monographs printed in Peking 20-500 2. Printing Chinese summaries of and binding papers printed in Sweden including shipping charges, a $ 55500 3. For monographs printed in Austria. 3 1;350 lh. Payment made to Mr, Lagrelius. $ 111.100 Total---- ------- $ 27.150
