00832, DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY PEKING UNION MEDICAL COLLEGE PEPING, CHINA. December 2, 19629, Dr, J,G, Andersson, Ostasiatiska Samlingarna, Sveavågen 65, Stockholm, Sweden, Dear Dr, Andersson:- At last I sit down to write you again as I said I would in my letter of last July! I expect that with you events have progressed as rapidly as with me so that we both find it difficult to realize how swiftly time goes by, Earlier in the year I had hoped to have been able to have the benefit of your advice and assistance here in the field this autumn but that prospeet grew dimmer as the er autumn approached and Dr, Wong still felt the time not to be propitious, I understand from him that he has written you on the subjeet, I am sufficiently remote from Cultural Society polities not to understand what it is all about but I trust that whatever obstruction there may be now will soon be removed, Mean- while we are both fully occupied with our respective programmes, I have at last got the affairs of the newly organized Cenozoic Research laboratory on a fairly routine basis and my budget has been accepted as presented, I have of course to present a new budget each year in April during the three and one half years our present arrangement holds but it is the first year which was the most difficult since I was away from April till July, During that time I was able to arrange to dispense funds through the Survey but it took a lot of disentanglement afterwards, Teilhard and C.C, Young had a very successful field trip in Shansi, Shensi and the Ordos lasting till the middle of September, Next season I hope they both can continue their work westward so that in our last year we may be able to proceed into Turkestan with a fair general knowledge of Cenozoie conditions from Kansu to the coast, Teilhard and Young have also completed a preliminary report on the Chou Kou Tien geology and palaeontology based on our first three vears! work there, Their MS is now in my hands for editing and I hope to have it nublished by New Year, Pei has uncovered two new Sinanthropus horizons at C,.K.T, this year yielding numerous excellent teeth but we are still nowhere near the bottom of the denosit, We elose this season's work the next week but Teilhard, Young, Pei and I will spend a week or so. in the region after that to clear un some interesting questions that have arisen, I am far behind in my own work but still I hope to get out another fascicle of Series D this winter and Young and Teilhard will have several papers also ready for the press before the spring so the publication programme of the Laboratory is developing, I hope as soon as I can clean up my work on the adult Sinanthropus jaw to arrange to make casts to send to Barlow in London and have him undertake the work of reproduction as before, I cannot handle that phase myself as it takes altogether too much time, I shall arrange somehow to have casts for vou but it

0033. will be some time yet I am afraid, TI hope you received the ohotogsraphs allright - it was exasperating to have the trans-Siberian route go out of commission just at that time, I have taken no new ones since but I have begun to take moving pictures of all phases of the C,K,T, work and hope to have a show ready for the Geol, Soc, Ann, meeting, I am going in strong for pietorial records but I still lack some of the necessary apparatus, I am very sorry not to have been able to send you anything more on the Sinanthropus material except the X-rays, photos and the article I wrote for the Bulletin, I have not been able to do anything in addition to that yet and I only hope it answered your purpose though I am afraid vou could not well make it into a communication for the Academy, I feel exceedingly grateful to you for having thought of such a thing, Keith and Elliot Smith too have been most kind in helping to put Sinanthropus on the map and Matthew also, I really have a feeling that my summer was not wasted when I see how truly Elliot Smith particularly has been converted, My word I wish you could be here to see all our stuff and really ehat about things once more, Let's hope our plans for meeting here next year will go smoothly. The day before yesterday we received the sad news of Y,T, Chao's death at the hands of brigands in Yunnan and it has cast a gloom over the Survev, He was the most promising of their men and Dr, Wong is very much eut up about it, We are having a memorial service at the Survey next week, I have sent you the completed Part I of the Kansu Skull paper which was not ready till September lst last being held up for the Chinese text, I wish the second part were ready! - but the real meat of the communication is in Parti; With ecordial regards and Christmas wishes in which Mrs, Black joins, I remain as ever Very sincerelv vours, . + Davidson Black,
