December 12 1928 Dear Dr, Andersson, Just a line to let you know that we have had wonderful success in this last season”s field work short as it was, Bohlin found the right half of an sdult Sinanthropus jaw with 3 molars in situ » the ascending ramus missing but enough symphysis present to show its chinless anthropoid character. A score and more teeth of all kinds and ages have been recovered mostly from a level some 10 meters above the original Sinanthropus laver but from which we have already recovered the symphysis region with inei. sors in situ of & Sinanthropus echlld and tkere appears to ba the better part of a much orushed adult skull and a ohild”sa skull also - I finished working out the ehlild”s jaw from the travertine matrix today and its mach more primitive than Neanderthel » resembles Piltdown in meny respects. Altogetnher we have enough material now to confirm ell our deduotions as to the presence of a very primitlive and generallzed hominid in the Polycene of N, China » and to keep me busy for months åesoribing it. And almost dslily further material is being recovered in the laboratory. Another adult molar Sinanthropus tooth from the blocks taken October 10, 1927 was recovered the day before yesteråay by Mr, Pel over at the Lockhart Hall laboratory, I have as yet no certainty that ve on get further funds to continue the work but with all this success I am optilmistic.
