id 5 Lev Är LA tee” DY25a The University of Chicago Department of Art Professor Bernhard Karlgren WVuseum of Far Eastern Antiquities Stockholm Dear Professor Karlgren, You would oblige me very deeply by giving me some information about a few objects in your museum,and by providing me with photos of them,if possible.I am working-still,I should say- on neolithic painted pottery in China and its affinities with the painted pottery of the Bandkeramik in Southeastern Europe. Here are a few questions related to the problem: 18 there an admixture of pounded or ground shells in the clay of the vessels from Pu Chao Chai,the site which had no painted pottery at all? Ig there any doubt about the genuineness and contemporaneity of the figures of a men,a horse and a bird painted on vessels of the Esin lien group in Kansu,reproduced in Andersson's Prel.Rep.p.l7,fig 5/a,c,d. ? Could I have photos of these vessels? Of what kind are the bronze objects,coming from a bronze age cemetery near Kuo Chia Chuang(Andersson,Children,p.259)and perhaps those from other sites of the T'ao valley?? $s there any indication whether they are pre-Shang or later? +s it possible to get photos or drawings of them? fhe same applies to the copper utensils from Hui Tsui site(Prel Rep.p.15),espe- cially to the knife.
