Dear Professor Elisseeff, Some years ago, before tha war out the connactions between us, I discussed in some lengthy letters the question ofhbow the correct meanings of certain B&aracters in ancient Chinese texts could be de- termined, and I insisted that a new standard dictionary such as the one you then planned could not, without disgussion, reproduce the "orthodox" meanings given in K'ang hi or Tse'i Yllan, since they left unconsidered all the painstaking ressarches of the great scholars of the Ts ing era. I am in a better possition to day to show you more exactly what I had in mind. ÅA fortnight ago I sent you vols. 1, 15, 16, 17 of our Bulletin, and in vols. 14 and 16 you will find extensive glosses on Giffioult words and phrases in the Od (Glosees 1-750); the remaining part, glosses 751-1200 (a very extensive paper) has now gone to the printer, and in a few monthe I hope to be able to send vol. 18 on to you. Since I have a extensive collection of excerpts from all the pre-Han literature, culled during many years of study, I hope to revert, in subsequent papers, to a discussion of debatable words in other classical texts.
