Sod Oxford University. February 12; 1948. Dear Sir, We, the undersigned, feel that a suitable tribute should be paid to the late Professor Harley Farnsworth MacNair, whose sudden death was so great a loss to Far Eastern Historical studies, and have decided to prepare a memorial volume of essays. 5 This volume would be divided into four sections: Diplomatie and political relations, edited by Sir John Pratt; History, edited by G.F. Hudson; Art and Archaeology, edited by William Cohn, and 3inology, edited by Professor Homer Dubbs. The proceeds of the volumes will go to a Harley Farnswortnh and Florence Ayscough MacNair memorial fund, for the advancement of Far Eastern studies. We are asking a number of the leading scholars and specialists in the respective fields mentioned above, to contribute articles ranging from 3000 words up to 15000 words in length, and invite you to contribute such an article on some theme you may choose in your special field of study. Perhaps we should emphasize the fact that this is to be in the nature of a reference work, rather specialized and töchnical. There will be no commemorative or memorial essays, nothing of a personal nature except the introduction by the general editor. Because of the nature of the proposed bock we must reserve the right to return any manuscripts. The volume is to be published by B.J. Brill, Leyden Holland. Please send articles and correspondence to lr. James W. Christopher, General Editor, Magdalen College, Oxford, England. We shall greatly appreciate it if you will do us the honor of contributing an article for the book. We should like to set a time limit on the manuscripts, of, say, October 1, this ycar, since we plan to go to press in November. Would you kindly let us know in answer to this letter the subject of your article. ge Me GF F-Hudan PN (
