OY7a November 23rda 1939, Dr, Wong Wen-huo, Ninietry of Economic Affairs, Ghungking, Dear Dr. tong, As I bave told you in previous lettere it was my intention to return once more to French Indochina, I had recelved an invitation from Ecole Francalse to return to Tonkin in order to continue my cooperation with this archaeologiocal institut. In fact I had booked a passage with the French steamer Cap Tourans which was scheduled to leave Marseille, Sept.22, Then the new European war broke out and I had to postpone my departure, ho- ping = perhaps beyond hope — that things will remain to normal conditions, My friends in our ressaroh committee have kindly made such an arrangement, that I can continue my research work within the sumseus for five more years without being bottered by administative duties, which is now tuken over by my successor professor Karlgren, Oonmequently I have How undertaken the systematio work of desori- bing the materials from the remsining prehistoric sites of Northern China. As you know thres archacologiesl monographe were brought out by me to Nan- king in 1936, Very unfortunately the Sino-Japanese war intervened so that the printing had to be postponed and the manuscripts are still in Dr, Huanås hands in the visinity of Chungking.
