0399 SS 29th January 1937 st SS Court Leys, Fd Toot Baldon, Oxford. Sr «Dear Professor Zarlgren, There is bad news about my bronze wine vees el, which you figure on Plate 53 of "Yin & Chou Eegearches"., Yetts becsme eus- picious of the ineceription when studying the bronze at the Chinese Exhibition. Least COstober he wrote to me sbout it, & when I went to J see him he told me thet he thought the inseription was of too early a type for the bronze, which he e3greed was of the period of the Werring States. Ee advised me to have it exsmined by Plenderleith, of the fritieh Museum laborsatories. After some delay I took it to Plenderleith, & have just received his report. The bronze ig genuine, but thefnsoription is counterfeit. Thet is a brief summary. If it would interest you, I could lster send you a copy of the Renort, bat I do not went to bother you unnecessarily. Plenderleith put FN the things through various micro-physeicel teets, besides dissolving away some of the spurious patina round the lip, so tYet I fear there ig no room to åoubt thet hie opinion is correct. I cannot tell you how sorry I em that you should have figured the bronze. I can only sey thet it had been seen by quite a number of collectors with a good knowledge of Chinese bronzes, & it had not been doubted before. Beck & I are getting on with the paper, & äiscovering how com- plicated the tack is. With beet regards, in which my wife joins, Yours very MD de . Fa
