0232 8th April 1936 Court Leys, Toot Baldon, Oxford. Me s$” Dear Professor Andersson, I must try to answer briefly the auestions you put in your letter of April 2nd. You will reelize thet the answer is provisional, & subject to modifications after the paper has been assembled & the whole discussed with Beck. S (1) I believe that the öc6sdaGn Ean "SleR besås of the type such as Beck & I figured in Nature- which we mey cell the Chin Tsun type- were made in China, my reason for this being thet barium is pregent in all the beads of this type thst we have had examined, & where the beads have been analysed gquantitatively it is shown to te present in considersble ouantity. Let me add that some 21lass objects, euch es & glass pi & a glese sword hilt, aleo contsin barium. MWe have not been able to hear of barium, excfet se an ocescionsl trace, in eny western besås of which analysis has been published or which we have hed exemined. (2) 50 fer I feel + am on feirly esfe ground. Now to be more speculsetive- & I am not sure how fer Beck will agree with me in what follows, I think on the whole the evidence ppöints to the pattern on some of thece Chin Isun beads being derived from patterns on what I propose to call Iron Åge besds of presumed Europesn origin, thet ig to say, beade thet have been found in ätruscean etc. graves of eaecer- teined dete. NI Ser kr ÖAR Aag tre Fadde (3) As I think I told you, visual inspection & spectrogrsphic

0233 ger examination both point to one group of /besås, which Aer believe to be from Pn Teun, being specimens thet have actually oorelorer lena) Bron the eastern Mediterranean area. They are identical with a particular type of besad whieh ore might term ZSgyptian, since they are so frequently FÅ found in Egypt, though there is no evidence to show that they were made there. In Eeypt their dste goes sf far back es så hanäreå years 2 B.C. (4) This particular type of besd wes certainly imitated in the Fer Zest; but thie is strange, thet the nearest imitetione are not, so far ac 1 know, all guikt glass but corsist of a core which is not in the ordinary sense glass (I wish to be very careful as to what I say sbout the core until further investigation hes been made),& which is covered with glazes to imitate the "Egyptian" form. These I think are the main outetending fects. at leest es I see — them. Now ec to your suggesticn thet something ehould be äone with re- gsrå to the Piao-bells, wriech I presume means bringing them into some European eollectiong. I em sorry to say thet even if you are succese- ful in sterting a fund for this purpose neither I now my wife are in & position to help you. You may have seen in the papers that a big effort ig to be made to get the younger Jews out of Germany, & settleåd partly in Palestine & partly I suppose elsewhere. The leaders of Sritish Jewry have pleiged thie country to subscribe a million pounds. Previous experience suggeste that almost the whole of this smount will
