White-ground lekythos. Cup mouth; narrow neck; moulding at junction between neck and shoulder; sloping shoulder; flattened handle from neck to shoulder; cylindrical body, tapering downwards; grooved disc base. Light red clay; ochre wash; black glaze; white, red, black and maroon paint. Mouth black except top; neck, handle, lower body and base top black; shoulder and most of body have white ground; ovoli encircling base of neck; red and black palmettes and tendrils on neck; right below shoulder meander and dotted cross pattern between double red bands; on body a youth wearing chlamys and petasos, holding spears, sitting on the steps of a decorated (palmette, volutes, acanthus leaves) grave stele – flanked by a standing woman in maroon chiton to the right, and a figure carrying an alabastron, bands and a basket to the left; red band below figures.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
