Many different kinds of symbols were used as amulets. They were placed between the layers of mummy wrappings, where they would protect the dead and help him to an eternal life.
The djed pillar symbolised stability and is related to the spine of Osiris. The shape of the symbol was taken from the lower vertebrae of a bull.
The scarab was an important symbol for re-birth and transformation. It also represented the new-born morning sun.
The eye of Horus stood for protection, primarily healing powers. The eye is a combination of a human eye and the markings of a falcon.The heart was depicted as a vessel. The Egyptians believed that one thought with the heart. Everything a person had thought and done was preserved there.
The papyrus plant represented the colour green, which in turn was associated with new life and rejuvenation.
The headrest had an important symbolic meaning. In the Book of the Dead “to lift up the head” was a paraphrase for re-birth.
The Isis knot was connected with welfare and life. It is not known what it actually depicts.
