"Concerning the spiritual culture of the babisa, I do not have much to say besides the information about the social conditions of the Bangveolo people, religious beliefs, etc., which I have already given in the two immediately preceding chapters. I also have on page. 89 mentioned a secret society, butwa, which exists among babisa. A pair of amulet necklaces from babisa are pictured here. One, fig. 261, consists of a penis bone, probably of an otter, a pig's tooth wrapped in copper wire containing red magic medicine, two small leather patches, four wooden sticks and nine glass beads, all strung on a base string. On the other necklace, fig. 262, appear a similar penis bone, a tip of an antelope clove (containing some kind of medicine), a lizard foot, four pieces of leather, thirteen glass beads and twenty-two wooden sticks. As can be seen, the foursome is not as prominent on these amulets as on the swamp people's." (pp. 351-352, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
